If you ask Ericsson Leung, a senior manager in supply chain analytics based in Sydney, why he joined Resmed, he’ll tell you half-jokingly that it’s because he’s finally working for a worthy cause. “I’m no longer selling loans, sugary drinks, or hotel rooms,” he jokes. “Now I’m helping deliver life-saving technologies to people around the world.” Doing meaningful work is just one reason why Ericsson says that Resmed stands out as a leading employer in the data analytics space.
Shaping strategy, not just pulling data
Ericsson describes his role in supply chain analytics supporting procurement at Resmed as being part of a “giant bowl of salad” — a mix of functions, teams and perspectives all working together. The teams include Ericsson’s colleagues in the areas of procurement, planning, logistics, finance, product development and more. That cross-functional collaboration is what makes the work so dynamic and diverse. “We’re not just pulling data and building dashboards,” he says. “We’re influencing strategic decisions.”
As demand for data-driven decision-making grows, so too does trust in analytics to help shape strategy. One of Ericsson’s team’s proudest achievements is that, Resmed can now pull together past, present and future costing data. This means better forecasting, smarter product design and fewer surprises down the line. “Let’s just say the product teams might have $10 to play with at the start of a project,” Ericsson explains. “Then three years later before launch, they find out they only have $8. That leads to rework, stress and compromises. Now, we can give them a clearer picture from day one.”
Encouraging failure and embracing ambiguity
Resmed’s culture is built on integrity and innovation. Ericsson’s team is encouraged to try things, even if they fail. “We just give things a try and if something doesn’t work, that’s okay. It’s a learning opportunity,” he says.
Ericsson believes that mindset is essential in a company undergoing major digital transformation. “We have a very strong ability to navigate ambiguity in our team. No one has all the answers, but together, we figure it out,” he says.
A strengths-focused approach to leadership
Ericsson has built his analytics team from scratch, growing it from one to six, including a high-performing offshore team in Malaysia. His approach to leadership is to build trust, understand each person’s strengths and give them opportunities to shine.
Ericsson defines his leadership style as:
• Trust across borders: Ericsson’s team in Malaysia may only meet with him in person twice a year. The rest of the time, the focus is on building trust remotely, through daily conversations, shared goals and mutual respect.
• No rigid hierarchy: Everyone is treated as an equal. Strengths define contribution.
• Strengths-based development: Ericsson focuses on identifying what each team member does best and creating opportunities for them to grow in that direction.
• Empowerment through ownership: Team members are encouraged to take initiative, experiment and learn from failure. Progress is valued over perfection.
What it takes to thrive at Resmed
Resmed has been a perfect fit for Ericsson and his career, but he has also come to understand that Resmed’s culture may not be for everyone. According to Ericsson, these are the values that stand at odds with Resmed:
• Contentment: If you’re satisfied with the status quo, you’ll miss the magic.
• Lack of curiosity: If you’re not asking questions or building networks, you’re not growing.
• Resistance to change: The only constant at Resmed is change.
Attracting new talent in data analytics
Data analytics has long been dominated by banks, insurers and tech giants. But this is changing as more companies like Resmed begin to heavily invest in data analytics and top industry talent to build their capabilities in the space. Resmed has been rapidly expanding its data analytics capabilities within the supply chain.
When Ericsson joined the company three years ago, he was the very first hire to lead the data analytics team within the larger Global Supplier Alliance (GSA) team inside Resmed (GSA is the core procurement team that partners with world class suppliers to provide a variety of products and services to help support Resmed). Since then, Ericsson’s data analytics team has grown by 500% (at the time of writing) — from a single role to six globally distributed members.
“We’re not in the central business district. We’re not a bank or a flashy tech startup. What we are is a company with a massive pool of smart, curious people, solving real-world problems with impact,” says Ericsson.
So, why are talented data analysts choosing to join Resmed?
“I was drawn to Resmed’s culture of innovation and its use of the latest technology to develop best-in-class solutions that maximise impact. Also, Resmed’s mission of helping people breathe and improve their quality of life aligns closely with my values and drive to use my skills to help others.” – Martin Williamson
“It’s an environment that encourages work-life balance, where personal value isn’t defined by long hours but by the quality of work. That motivates me to keep improving both my technical and soft skills. I also like that the work is practical and meaningful, not just repetitive tasks, which makes growth feel more effective, especially in a technical role like mine.” – Kar Yin Chong
“I am excited by the complexities and the nitty gritty of the data and turning it into actionable insights for our business users. It is definitely something that aligns with my passion and purpose.” – Nur Aliyah Misri
With global reach and a mission that matters, we’re building the future of healthcare, and we need talented, curious people to help us do it. If you’re looking for a place where you can grow, lead and make an impact, Resmed might just be the place you’ve been searching for. We’re not just hiring — we’re inviting people to be part of something meaningful.
